7. What Happened To Marcus & Anya?

Many times implied, but nothing concrete, Marcus and Anya bowed out of the original trilogy by growing closer as the sun set on that final battle against Queen Myrrah - the assumption being that they 'lived happily ever after.'

This much appears true, as in April's 'Tomorrow' trailer we saw Marcus and Anya living peacefully on a farm (the anonymous blonde woman being confirmed as Anya thanks to a DLC costume called' Tomorrow Anya') - a sharp contrast to later trailers that see Marcus now sitting alone in that same family farm, as an adult J.D. returns.

Did the two grow apart after an initial 'romance' that resulted in J.D.? What events drove him to leave for the huge gap between games, before eventually returning? Is it possible Marcus lost Anya to the new enemies we're seeing ravage the land, yet he couldn't bring himself to get embroiled in another war?

Here's hoping Anya hasn't suffered a similar fate to Maria Santiago, Dom's wife in Gears 2, as that won't bode well for Marcus' mental state...
