5. Freya's Past

For those not familiar with Norse mythology may have missed this, as it is not addressed in the main, linear section of the narrative.

Freya is introduced as the Witch in the Woods and is only later revealed to be the former wife of Odin himself, and the mother of Baldur.

By the end of the game, with Baldur now dead, Freya, consumed by motherly love, vows to rain destruction upon Kratos, setting herself up to be a future antagonist, but there’s more than is learnt through a piece of optional dialogue.

After completing the main narrative and returning to Midgard, Mimir will tell Kratos and Atreus that while they ventured into Jotunheim, Freya sought him out, demanding to know where Odin had guarded her warrior spirit and her Valkyrie wings.

This is triggered sometime after defeating the current Queen of the Valkyrie’s Sigrun, but Mimir reveals that it was Freya herself who originally led the Valkyrie before being cast out by Odin. If Freya is seeking her Valkyrie wings with vengeance on her mind, Kratos better watch himself in the sequel.
