God Of War PS4 Review: 8 Ups & 1 MINOR Down
3. The Perfect, Innovative Way To Pepper A "Single Player Game" With Side Content
God of War isn't necessarily an "open world game", though its structure is inherently based on freeform exploration and the player's choice to pursue a main thread of missions. It's like those larger, open areas from Uncharted made into one game; large environments where puzzle rooms and minor collectibles/quests are tucked away behind cracks in a wall, darkened tunnels or around corners.
Spend five minutes away from where your main quest marker is pointing, and you WILL find something. This blend of genres gives God of War an appeal routed both in narrative, and - post-credits - seeking out every last piece of content you know you missed along the way.
All of this comes from the more "designed" areas, as there's also a central hubworld with a spider-like construction where every additional "leg" is another environment, combat encounter or side quest. You'll pick up quest markers by talking to the handful of NPCs if you want to indulge in combat and the "open world", but you can absolutely play this as a single player experience too.
