GTA 6: 10 Specific Lessons It Must Learn From Recent Games
6. One Playable Character Can Be More Fulfilling Than Three
GTAV’s innovative choice to have three protagonists was a bit a hit and miss. Whilst it did successfully offer a unique, multiple-perspective approach to the story, alongside different characters to fit different play styles, it was also harder for the player to make a strong connection to each of these characters.
Sure, it was great fun playing as Trevor, mowing down pedestrians in your underwear and ranting about hipsters, but that was often counter-balanced when playing as Michael and doing yoga, or playing as Franklin and driving a painstakingly slow tow truck.
With so much chopping and changing between characters, it felt like we didn’t get enough time with each of them as individuals, despite the lengthy campaign. If we once again compare this to Red Dead 2, it’s fair to say that the hours spent with Arthur Morgan were more memorable.
Similarly to Red Dead, the game should include a high number of well-written and interesting characters, much like the members of Dutch’s gang, but should also leave us in control of one sole member of this group. Let us follow their thoughts, their struggles, their highs and their lows throughout the campaign and build an emotional connection.
Also, please continue to allow us to mow down pedestrians in our underwear and rant about hipsters.
