5. FIFA 14
The daddy of all football games. FIFA and rival franchise Pro Evolution Soccer were locked in a battle for supremacy for much of the last decade, only for-in my opinion, of course-FIFA to pull ahead of PES with subtle tweaks to the game play adding to the sense of realism that was aided by the full licensing. Much of FIFA's appeal lies in the superb on-line play options, and thrashing an 11 year old child from Tennessee is as satisfying as ever due to the greater focus on animations, meaning that the game looks and feels a lot smoother. The players react with more intelligence to on-coming tackles and other realistic situations, which solves the age old problem of sweeping a glorious thirty-yard crossfield ball to your left-winger, only to find him trotting happily and obliviously up the touchline with his back to play. FIFA is the biggest game in its field, and it has just got a whole lot better. What else makes the perfect gift for both your 9 year old nephew AND your game-mad spouse?
