What characterises GTA now? Most of the time it's the little rotary map in the corner alongside some vague semblance of an open world that'll net your game an 'inspired by GTA' label, but the GTA of today is a far cry from the direction Rockstar seemed to be taking the series through San Andreas. As mentioned the whole back half of that game did go a little too crazy in terms of the mission designs, as suddenly you were an L.A.-style gangster infiltrating a high-tech security base under cover of nightfall to recover something that turned out to be a jetpack. This general sense of over-the-top ridiculousness is what Rockstar then did an about-face on with IV, leading to Saints Row picking up the pieces and finding themselves soon after - rather like Family Guy's embrace of the most stupid visuals and gags possible in the face of The Simpsons' more streamlined script-focussed route of the 90s. GTA most likely can't reclaim its crazy-crown these days - although with the latest Saints Row being TOO over the top for its own good, it's possible - but whether they go down a serious, story-focussed route and do a truly spectacular crime narrative, or return back to their routes and do a more charming, somewhat fun take on the staples of the genre, it needs to have a lot more conviction than GTA V's 'please the masses' approach. What do you think? Is GTA V already a perfected formula, or are some things lacking? Let us know in the comments!
