Even though Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is still a couple months out from release, 2020's entry in the long-running series is already starting to take shape.

Following on from Kotaku's report earlier in the year, which claimed that development duties on the project had shifted from Sledgehammer and Raven to Treyarch, who weren't expected to release a new game until 2021, a new rumour on social media has corroborated this information and elaborated on what the studio is working on.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Treyarch are once again working on another entry in the lucrative Black Ops sub-franchise, but this time it's being viewed as something of a soft-reboot. The team is allegedly going back and forth on two names for the title: Call of Duty: Black Ops 5, or simply Call of Duty: Black Ops.

According to the posting, the sequel/reboot will be dropping the futuristic setting the franchise has called home ever since the second game, instead jumping back to the Cold War for a plot that spans 40 years, and covers both the Vietnam and the Korean War.

It's not just the reboot and naming convention that's following in the footsteps of this year's Modern Warfare either, as apparently Treyarch are planning on being even grittier than 2019's release. Admittedly, the Blops franchise has always been darker than Activision's other CoD titles, but it's still interesting that the franchise as a whole is gunning for a far more mature approach.

Though it's only one tweet so far, LongSensation has accurately leaked Call of Duty news in the past, but as always take it with a pinch of salt. With how much Call of Duty 2020 has changed over this past year, nothing is set in stone.
