Indiana Jones Game: 10 Things It Must Learn From Uncharted & Tomb Raider
6. Be Funny!
As video game stories get longer with each new instalment of a franchise, it's crucial to ensure the game's tone is as consistent as it is engaging. Maintaining atmosphere to last 20+ hours is no easy task, and alleviating the stress of tense enemy encounters or dark narrative themes with comedy is a wonderful ay to keep the player's attention.
Uncharted was a master of this. Though the stories were nothing unique (clearly taking inspiration from Croft and Jones to begin with!), the moment-to-moment gameplay is packed full of heart-stopping sequences, and with the characters constantly in peril, the humour that litters the game's script offers a wonderful respite from the mayhem.
Conversely, the recent Tomb Raider trilogy got so caught up trying to tell a mature story and create tense moments that the comedy was non-existent. All three are fantastically written and performed by Camilla Luddington and co, despite suffering greatly from their tone being somewhat one-note; a shame given their fantastic gameplay and wonderful character development.
Indiana Jones has a plethora of chuckle-worthy scenes, and failing to capitalise on them in the upcoming game would be a colossal missed opportunity.
