True Believers - say hello to the Roxxon corporation.

Last week's surprise announcement that Insomniac were working on a standalone Miles Morales game was pretty amazing, but the nature of the reveal left fans with more questions than was potentially necessary.

Comments from a Sony executive that the game would be more an "expansion" or "remaster" than an out and out sequel were misinterpreted, and now Insomniac have taken the time to clarify what exactly Spider-Man: Miles Morales is all about, lifting the lid on plot details, the game's length, and even a tease of the story's villains.

Writing for the official PlayStation blog, Spider-Man: Miles Morales creative director Brian Horton confirmed that the title would be a full standalone experience, similar in scale to Uncharted: Lost Legacy "in terms of overall scope". Horton also revealed how Insomniac are channelling the power of the PS5 for the new title, stating that the game will "show off near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio and the DualSense controller", while characters have been "upgraded with 4D scans", and the city's assets have also been given a fresh lick of paint.

By far the most interesting details Horton disclosed however were to do with the game's story:

"Let’s set the scene for the game a little more. It’s now wintertime, about a year after the events of the first game. Marvel’s New York is covered in snow, and just before Christmas break, a war between an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army has broken out. Miles’s new home in Harlem is at the heart of the battle."

So, what we have here are a few confirmations - some concrete, others tacit. For starters, we now know the game is set a full year and not a few months after the events of 2018's Spider-Man game. Miles is now also living in Harlem, which implies we may not see Brooklyn as fans had initially hoped. That said, the conflict between "an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army" is cause for excitement, as it heavily implies that the villainous Roxxon corporation could be one of the main antagonists in the game.

In the comics, Roxxon are pretty much the baddest corporation in the Marvel universe, and their offices were visible in Spider-Man PS4. They also have a unique link to Miles Morales in that they were major antagonists in the original Ultimate series he made his debut in. There, they engaged in cloning, super soldier programs and even stuff related to the symbiotes, which is all very exciting and obviously relevant, given the forces at play in the 2018 game.

That particular arc saw Miles team up with the Ultimate versions of Spider-Woman, Cloak and Dagger, but it remains to be seen if they'll make it into Insomniac's rendition of the Marvel universe. As for the "high-tech criminal army" - it's possible the Tinkerer or AIM could be involved, although the involvement of the latter in Crystal Dynamics' upcoming Avengers title may preclude them from appearing.

1. Who Voices Peter Parker/Spider-Man?

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
