Insomniac's Spider-Man 2: 5 Obscure Villains That Must Appear

2. Chameleon

Spider-Man PS4 Chameleon
Marvel Comics

Making his debut in the very first issue of The Amazing Spider-Man as Peter’s first ever rogue, Chameleon is often mentioned in the same breath as some of Spider-Man’s greatest enemies, but is never regarded by audiences and fans as much more than that guy with a disguise kit who got drugged with spiked cookies and beaten by Aunt May that one time. Yeah, him.

But, when you break down most of Chameleon's stories and appearances, you realise he’s far more than a master of disguise with a ridiculously long name (Dmitri Anatoly Nikolayevich Smerdyakov - try saying that three times quickly), he’s a malicious and calculating mastermind who pulls the strings and orchestrates the downfall of some of the most powerful figures in the Marvel universe.

Seeing as Spider-Man’s Creative Director Bryan Intihar believes that the greatest Spider-Man stories are “[ones] where Peter Parker and Spider-Man’s worlds collide”, Chameleon would make for the perfect villain to both Peter and Spidey, a threat who could be disguised as anyone, anywhere, picking apart Peter’s carefully constructed secret identity from right under his nose.

If that isn’t a Spider-Man and Peter Parker collision ripe for storytelling drama, we don’t know what is.
