This guy really should have been at the beginning of the game. Sir Bernard is the Commander of Rattay's guards and the guy who'll finally teach you how to block better, parry, pull off specific attacks and counter properly.

Once that story mission is done, seek him out again as there are many more lessons to be learned.

Three additional tiers of training unlock as you hit levels 5, 10 and 15 in Combat, though even choosing to spar with Bernard will increase stats in specific areas relating to strength and agility, alongside whatever weapon you have equipped.

A solid afternoon with Sir Bernard is invaluable, especially as it's the fastest way to learn the unblockable "Master Strike" skill.
