Remember the scene where Abby wakes up in the Wolves' Stadium base? She's fallen asleep reading a book, but it turns out that particular book has much more significance than you think.

City of Thieves, written by David Benioff, is a novel close to the hearts of the team who made The Last of Us. This book is a massive inspiration for the series as a whole - indeed, Neil Druckmann, director of The Last of Us, went on record saying the following:

"We own our influences. We don't mind. It's nice to be inspired, right? And I think everybody... there's no true original art anymore. It's nice to be inspired by things- inspired by the right things. City of Thieves is an amazing book. Everybody should check that out. And it's a good medium. You're flipping through the pages and turning it and feeling for these characters. And so we were trying to break down what is good story? What is a good game? What is good stuff when you're trying to marry these things together?"

The references to Benioff go even further. Lev, Abby's Seraphite companion, is named after the character with the same name in City of Thieves.
