4. Drastically Expanded Crafting System (Explosive Arrows!)
Although often overshadowed in terms of talking points by its narrative and characters, Last of Us has a really slick, on-the-fly crafting system, that especially on harder difficulties, becomes even more of an integral gameplay mechanic.
Tap the touch pad to set up shop and you can emerge out the other side with a molotov cocktail, smoke grenade, nail bomb or even a medipack.
Going forward, Neil Druckmann has stressed that they wanted to increase the amount of "object combos" you could create, meaning you're still snatching up magazines, bits of paper, cloth etc., but the final results will be more varied.
I've already mentioned soda can suppressors, but even better are an array of arrow heads, with one being an explosive variant.
As a final note, if you've played the newer Tomb Raider series, Lara unlocked the ability to make weapons and distraction devices from parts of the environment, crafting them in very much same way as The Last of Us.
With those options extending to enemy radios as noise bombs, maybe there's a bit of competitive one-upmanship going on between these developers.
