Mass Effect: Andromeda - 10 Big Questions We're Asking After E3

7. Where€™s The Hero?

Another small point from the official press release is that the character shown at the beginning of the trailer isn't actually who you'll be playing as. It's perhaps more because ME's heroes remain genderless so you can decide what route you'd like to go down - but to go a step further, it could be Bioware addressing the complaints about Shepard's authenticity from the original trilogy. As any who've created a custom Shep will know; it was pretty impossible to get him to look anywhere near as good as the actual face model present on the box art - mainly because that 'real' Shepard had been modelled on a real person; Mark Vanderloo. It'll be very interesting to see if Bioware can push the universe exploration and potential base-building mechanics enough to get around having to put a 'face' to the main character this time round. It's definitely worked a treat for No Man's Sky, but that doesn't have the pressure of being one of gaming's greatest franchises to contend with, and it's mighty hard to push such a thing without a recognisable figure to get behind.
