Mass Effect: Ranking Every Main Squad Member In The Original Trilogy

4. Liara T'soni

Samara Mass Effect
BioWare

Dr. T'Soni went from being a naive and empathetic Asari scientist to a ruthless and cold successor to the infamous Shadow Broker. Appearing in all three games and a squad mate in 1 and 3, Liara is one of the most fleshed out characters in the series.

After her adventures with Shepard in the first game, Liara hardens up and matures into a far more cerebral presence while also hanging onto her moral core. Being raised by a strict and controlling mother in Matriarch Benezia, Liara ends up growing into a hybrid of her mother and the more optimistic young scientist you encounter in the first game. This gives Liara a realistic sense of flaws and attributes.

She is also significant for being the first LGBTQ+ romance option in the franchise as both a male and a female Shepard can romance her. As Kaidan and Ashley both struggle with Shepard in Mass Effect 2, Liara can also feel like the default romance throughout the trilogy. She is distanced at first in Mass Effect 2 but the relationship can be rekindled before being fully developed in Mass Effect 3. The romance options with Liara are exceptionally well written for both male and female Shepard throughout.
