1. Mega Man 2 (1989)
Mega Man 2 is easily one of the top five most important games in the entire NES library. Taking everything from the original game and tweaking it to perfection, Mega Man 2 also established some of the tenets of the series. The number of robot masters, the sprites used for health and weapon energy, the ridiculously catchy music and more. The game also features a wonderfully diverse set of robot masters that feel fresh and varied, with levels that are just as unique and well thought out. Along with super tight controls and an art style that would define every Mega Man game following it, Mega Man 2 deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as other trail-blazers like Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda.
