Metal Gear Rising Revengeance: 10 Reasons It Won't Live Up To The Hype

5. Controls

What's clear about the combat in Revengeance is that Platinum Games want you to learn a new system of play, and they want you to do this in order to create an eventually seamless flow to the combat. Using the parry system to take on multiple enemies is a tough nut to crack, requiring sure concentration and muscle memory. The lack of a block button has already received a litany of complaints online, with the parry - an exercise in timing which requires waiting for a red flash, moving the left analogue stick in the direction of attack, and then pressing X (on the Xbox) - being extremely difficult to get to grips with. Many think that assigning parry to the X button - the same button used for attacking - is a major mistake, as it heightens the chance you'll screw up and just attack instead. This is something that could easily have been remedied with some slightly smarter button mapping; instead, it seems like a way to confuse people and make the game artificially harder than it has to be. Or maybe I and all the other whiners just suck at this game?
