Metal Gear Solid Remake: 10 Things That Must Remain Untouched

2. The Voice Acting

When Kiefer Sutherland was announced as the new voice of Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid V, well, let's just say that people didn't take it well. Many people felt disappointed that the iconic voice of David Hayter (voice actor of every incarnation of Solid Snake as well as Big Boss in MGS3) was not going to be appearing in MGSV, despite Kojima's explanation that it was simply a creative decision; he simply wanted somebody who could "convey both the facial and vocal qualities of a man in his late 40s". It's a shame that this seems to be the end of David Hayter's role in the Metal Gear Solid universe. His gruff tones brought Solid Snake to life and it's hard to imagine anybody else voicing the character; at least Hayter only voiced Big Boss for one game. Worryingly though, for fans of the original PlayStation title, a bonus mission in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (entitled "Deja Vu") serves as a throwback to the first Metal Gear Solid and in that mission, Solid Snake is also voiced by Sutherland. Of course, Konami weren't going to bring Hayter in to record a few lines of dialogue for a nostalgic bonus mission but, when you consider the possibility of a FOX Engine remake, it isn't hard to see why the company would have Sutherland voice Solid Snake. He may even do a good job at it... But he shouldn't be given the chance. It's not just David Hayter though. Pretty much all of the original Metal Gear Solid voice cast are superb. Take Greg Eagles (or Gray Fox as he's better known) as an example. There's something intriguing about his performance as the cyborg ninja that brings the character to life, especially during the character's final scene; he sounds genuinely world weary. Patric Zimmerman is also notable as Revolver Ocelot (interestingly, he's also been dropped from Metal Gear Solid V in favour of Troy Baker); his gravelly tones really evoke memories of classic western baddies. Want further proof of how important it is to keep this cast together? When making the Twin Snakes, David Hayter reportedly went out of his way to persuade Konami to bring the entire original cast back, even, according to some sources, giving up part of his own fee to ensure it happened. Are you going to disagree with Solid Snake? Didn't think so.
