Metroid: Every Main Series Game Ranked Worst To Best

2. Metroid Prime

While Nintendo's flagship franchises Mario and The Legend Of Zelda received 3D updates on the Nintendo 64, fans of the Metroid franchise had to wait until 2002 to see how Samus would play in a fully fledged and entirely explore-able environment.

And boy, was it worth the wait. Not only does the first entry in the Metroid Prime sub-series still look fantastic eighteen years later, it somehow perfectly mapped the refined gameplay of Super Metroid onto a 3D environment.

Thankfully not turning the game into a full-blown shooter, Metroid Prime's first-person viewpoint seems at odds with the game's focus on exploration, though Retro Studios managed to merge the genres seamlessly.

Up there with the likes of Ocarina Of Time, Metroid Prime is still considered by many to be one of the best video games of all time. While its sequels have not quite managed to live up to its heights, if the much-anticipated Metroid Prime 4 manages to do to the series what Breath Of The Wild did to Zelda, fans are in for a treat indeed.
