Metroid: Every Main Series Game Ranked Worst To Best
3. Metroid: Samus Returns
Doing for Return Of Samus what Zero Mission did for Metroid 1986 and then some, the success of Samus' first 2D outing in thirteen years proves there's still an appetite for classic side-scrolling Metroid gaming.
Finally giving players the ability to aim in any direction, Samus Returns added a bunch of new features into the mix, the most notable being the bounty hunter's melee attack. While zipping through enemies has always been satisfying, this subtle touch was a refreshing and well-implemented way to shake up the gameplay without feeling like an arbitrary gimmick.
Moreover, Samus now has the ability to scan rooms to reveal certain secrets, a welcome addition for newcomers to the franchise given how well-hidden these can be. Thankfully, this is entirely optional, so the more hardcore gamer out there can still get their Metroid exploration fix.
One of the best looking games on the Nintendo 3DS, SR388's three dimensional backgrounds make the environment seem like a living world.
Come on Nintendo, it's about times we get a new original 2D adventure.
