Yes, the "K" bit is going to be a thing.

At the onset of Mortal Kombat's history, it was littered with hidden treats for players to discover and unlock. Among them included one of the first hidden characters, the green-tinted Scorpion clone Reptile. Fought at the bottom of the Pit stage of the first game, Reptile became something of an urban myth among arcade patrons in the early '90s.

Following the success of this concept, Jade Smoke, and Noob Saibot appeared in the sequels, with the trio eventually became mainstays within the series despite rather humble origins. By the time the games began the transition to 3-D with Mortal Kombat 4, those unique, intriguing character concepts began to wane, and strange new ideas began to take shape.

Starting first with Meat, a skinless fighter who was typically used to show gore effects in other characters fatalities, he was given precious little agency or backstory. Following Meat came the inexplicable Mokap, a literal motion capture actor.

Perhaps most striking of all was Blaze. A sprite that was used as a flaming background character in Mortal Kombat 2, Blaze was given such prominence that a makeover allowed him to become the final boss of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
