Mortal Kombat: 10 Crazy Things You Didn’t Know
7. Cameron Diaz Was Cast As Sonya In The Original Mortal Kombat Movie
There is an alternate universe out there where Cameron Diaz played Sonya Blade in the first Mortal Kombat live-action film. Maybe Fire God Liu Kang can open up a gateway to this reality just so fans can see it.
The original Mortal Kombat movie is a mixed bag that some consider a poor adaptation, but others see it as an enjoyable romp and an example of how to get a video game movie right. Whatever side of the fence you're on, there's no denying that it would have looked very different had this original casting choice gone through.
Diaz, the popular Hollywood star, wasn't just close to playing Sonya Blade in the film - she was going to portray her (via The Hollywood Reporter). The There's Something About Mary actor was offered and accepted the role after the producers caught dailies of her performance in The Mask.
Sadly, Diaz was forced to drop out of the film due to an injury, as she broke her wrist during martial arts training. With Diaz unable to perform the stunts, the role went to Bridgette Wilson-Sampras instead.
Things worked out for Diaz in the end, but it's a shame Mortal Kombat fans didn't get to see her take on the iconic Earthrealm Champion.
