Mortal Kombat: 10 Crazy Things You Didn’t Know
4. Steven Spielberg Was Supposed To Cameo In The First Mortal Kombat Movie
If you thought the idea of Cameron Diaz being in the first Mortal Kombat movie was weird, well, it gets even weirder. The legendary Steven Spielberg, director of Schindler's List, Jaws, Indiana Jones, E.T., and more, was also slated to appear, but it wasn't meant to be.
Part of what made the first movie popular was its self-awareness, as it was perfectly willing to poke fun at itself. Well, this joke would have sat easily with that, as Spielberg was going to play a director working on a movie with Johnny Cage, satirising Hollywood, the Mortal Kombat games, and fitting in perfectly with the character.
Spielberg is an avid gamer and a big fan of Mortal Kombat, which is why this appearance was even on the cards. It would have added something to the scene, for sure. But, tragically, this epic cameo (or, should we say, Kameo) was unable to come to fruition due to scheduling conflicts.
In the end, the role was given to Sandy Helberg, who was dressed and styled to look like the famous director instead. It's a massive shame, as seeing him in the role would have been iconic. Still, at least viewers got to see Spielberg play himself in Austin Powers Goldmember. That's something, right?
