In the original game, Johnny Cage can perform a Fatality where he punches his opponent's head off. Due to a glitch, Cage can punch off the head a second time. If he performs a move immediately after the decapitation, his opponent's head will grow back!

As a reference to this bug, Johnny Cage can punch off his opponent's head three times in the sequel.

Nearly 30 years later and the MK team are still making fun of this programming error. In MK11, Johnny Cage can perform a Fatality where he tries to knock his opponent's head with an uppercut but only manages to rip their chin off.

A woman shouts, "Cut! Reset!" showing the "fight" is a scene which Cage is rehearsing. When the film crew shoot the scene again, it goes wrong, causing Cage to yell, " Who hired this guy, what the fu-".

Not only is this a nod to the Uppercut glitch in the original game, it is a reference to the film adaptation. In the Mortal Kombat movie, Cage shoots a fighting scene but becomes agitated when one of the actors misses his cue. He storms off set and shouts, "Where do you get these guys!"
