On the NBA 2K18 Gameplay Blog, gameplay editor Mike Wang was very enthusiastic about the way players will move in the new edition of the game. In the past, player movement wasn't always natural or skill-dependent.

Rather, it was animation driven, meaning that sometimes a slower player could block/steal/shoot the ball quicker than the statistically superior one, simply because of the animation that activated itself at the moment.

This should be no longer the case, as this edition is supposed to stitch together skills and movements to create the animation. In other words, the animation will be the result of a combination of the skills of the gamer and the player.

This in turn will make the game feel even more authentic not only visually, by making it more fluent, but more importantly, as an experience.
