Nintendo NX: 8 Reasons It's Already Doomed
2. It's Going To Lack Focus
While the PS4 and Xbox One have games that cater to much younger, family-orientated audiences, the consoles are very much designed for the hardcore gamer (that is, teenagers and twenties/thirties adults who spend a lot of time playing). These consoles don't just serve as gaming hubs, but have a massive range of media options, from the ability to stream movies and store music to a massive range of functional third party apps.
In the past, Nintendo has largely shunned third party media. The Wii U's apps are infamously awful (looking at you, Netflix) and they've never really been bothered to fix them. With the Wii, Nintendo very much wanted to capture the casual market. Nintendo said many times that it was interested in drawing in players who had not played video games in many years, or had never played them at all. This meant long-term gamers became alienated by the quality of the console's software, and the primitive nature of its media features. Nintendo aren't going to abandon this principal. It's been a core part of the company's ethos for decades. But this attempt to cater to both audiences will ultimately alienate both, as more serious gamers cry out for features that go against this family-friendly principal (case in point: any form of online voice chat) and casual gamers simply get bored and stop playing.
