Nintendo’s 10 Biggest Failures EVER

5. The Super Mario Bros. Film

When Nintendo announced their mascot, Super Mario, was going to be the first video game character to receive a film adaption, fans couldn't contain their excitement. At first, it looked promising. It had a great cast including Bob Hoskins as Mario, John Leguizamo as Luigi, and Dennis Hopper as King Koopa.

What could possible go wrong? Everything. Everything could go wrong. The film had three directors who couldn't agree on what direction to take the story. Despite the fact they were adapting a children's game, one of the directors "shot scenes with strippers and with other sexually-explicit content, which all got edited out anyway" according to Leguizamo.

Bob Hoskins said Super Mario Bros. was the worst thing he ever did. He got stabbed four times and had his finger broken while shooting a scene. Hoskins got so frustrated, he used to get drunk in-between scenes. He never learned his lines because the script changed every day.

This film is directly responsible with studios associating "video game adaptations" with "box-office poison".

Ironically, the first video game adaption to perform well financially and critically was Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, which was the first film adaption based on Nintendo's property in 26 years.
