Nintendo’s 10 Biggest Failures EVER
4. Creating Its Competition
The PlayStation only exists because of Nintendo.
Nintendo and Sony were supposed to create the Nintendo 64 together. While devising the N64 though, CDs were becoming popular because they could hold 300 times more data than a cartridge.
This posed a problem since Nintendo wanted to stick with cartridges because CDs made games have loading times and blocky graphics. If Final Fantasy VII was on the N64, it would have needed 13 cartridges! Realising that the companies wanted different things, Sony left the partnership and formed their own console.
The Nintendo 64 was a success, selling 32.93 million units, released 388 games, and made some ground-breaking platformers including Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Although that sounds like quite an achievement, the PSOne sold a staggering 102.49 million units, making it the first console to sell over a hundred million.
Because CDs are cheaper and easier to manufacture, the console pumped out 2,418 games during its cycle. Its successor, the PS2, sold 155 million units, making it the best-selling console of all time.
Nintendo also refused to compromise with Sony, creating their greatest business rival - a mistake they have been paying for ever since.
