Nintendo's 10 Biggest Blunders And Fails

1. Creating The PlayStation

When the thought of Nintendo's abysmal run during the 2000s occurs only one word springs to mind as the cause: PlayStation.

How, then would it feel to know the PlayStation was created by Nintendo themselves? It would be like Vince McMahon creating WCW and then giving it away to Ted Turner. After several blunders in to the disc format, Nintendo struck a deal with Sony to create an add on the SNES system that would allow it to play all new CD games and SNES cartridges. This sounds like a wonderful idea. Imagine the combined power of Nintendo and Sony on one console!

However, at some point Nintendo got cold feet and felt that the deal would give Sony too much creative power over Nintendo games and they backed out of the deal. Did they take the PlayStation with them? Or buy it from their partner? No. They left it with a now bitter Sony, who pushed the console in to production and were out for revenge against Nintendo.

The CD format proved to be infinitely easier and more adaptable than cartridges and many developers left for Sony, as did millions of gamers. One of these developers was Squaresoft, who took the huge Final Fantasy franchise with them.

Nintendo birthed a fully realised console in the hands of snubbed rivals with a medium that was already proving to be more popular amongst developers than cartridges, and they thought nothing of it. Due to that one mistake, Nintendo consigned themselves to third place in the market for two decades and created the market leader, Sony PlayStation, which has left Nintendo hobbling in its wake ever since.
