The Lie: People have taken to labelling Hello Games' Sean Murray as 'the next Molyneux', but back in the early 2000s ol' Petey was dropping some ridiculous porky pies his game was never going to live up to. One particular descriptions alluded to how you could "carve your initials in a tree [and they would] still be there if you come back to the tree 10 years later."

That was just the tip of the iceberg.

The Reality: Molyneux's ambitious blustering came crashing down when the game launched, as he took to developer Lionhead's forums to issue a formal apology. Explaining that everything he described was in development "at some point", the particular point about the trees growing in real time was apparently shelved, as it took up "15% of processor time".

Sure. You removed the feature you talked about, but still included the tech to kick a chicken up the bum? #gamedevelopment

It makes you wonder if this is the reason so many developers - and Sean Murray - get caught in such a specific trap. How do you advertise something that isn't fully formed, that you fully expect to be formed in due time, and have every faith will come together as expected?

Molyneux stands out as a particularly egregious example of being a walking clickbait-machine, but put in his shoes and with a little restraint, how would you advertise your game to the world?
