PlayStation 5: 8 Rumours We Hope AREN'T True
4. A Nintendo Switch Rival
Nintendo has always been a great innovator in the hardware space. It put handheld gaming on the map in the late 1980s and did the same for motion controllers two decades later. Its consoles aren't always the bestselling of their generation, but they're usually the ones its competitors set out to imitate, to an extent, at least.
The Big N's latest flagship system the Switch is a unique piece bit of kit that blurs the line between home console and handheld gaming device, and word has it that Sony wants to challenge the system head-on with a hybrid of its own.
Comments from PlayStation chief John Kodera - reported here by T3 - have sparked rumours that the PS5 could combine high-end console gaming with portability.
“In my opinion, rather than separating portable gaming from consoles, it’s necessary to continue thinking of it [portable gaming] as one method to deliver more gaming experiences and exploring what our customers want from portable. We want to think about many options.”
Although Kodera hasn't flat-out said that Sony is about to ape the Switch and make the PS5 a hybrid, many have interpreted his remarks that way, but let's hope the PlayStation hardware team are cooking up something more original.
Mobile and portable gaming is huge right now, thanks to tablet and smartphones as well as the Switch. While it is unclear whether Sony is planning to redouble its efforts in this space with the launch of a new PS Vita, it's a sector they cannot ignore.
Fingers crossed Sony will do its own thing to cater for the mobile market, rather than simply rip off Nintendo with the launch of a hybrid PS5.
