Pokémon Switch: 8 Rumors & Details You Need To Know
4. A New, 'Simplified' Battle System Will Replace Turn-Based Combat
Game Freak did a bang up job, squeezing every last ounce of processing power out of Nintendo's long line of handhelds, so just imagine what it could do with the franchise on a home console.
Pokémon and turn-based combat have always gone hand-in-hand for the mainline series, but that could all be about to change, according to a series of Chinese rumours translated by fan site Pokéjungle. As per the whispers, a new "simplified battle system" has been constructed for the Switch title, having been likened to that of the Digimon World games (i.e. free movement is possible, but commands are still issued via menus) and Pokken Tournament, which adopts a rock-paper-scissors formula.
How much truth is there to the rumour? Well, several pounds of salt should be taken with the information, but it does come from a reliable source that accurately leaked several details for Ultra Sun & Moon before they were made official, so they can't be discredited entirely.
Besides, turn-based combat worked 20 years ago, but the RPG genre has since moved on outside the realm of handhelds. Game Freak knows it can't rely on the same formula forever, and what better catalyst for change is there, besides a fresh start?
