We've known for a while that backwards compatibility was going to be a major feature for the PS5, after patents continued to leak across the past year or so, but the only official confirmation came when Mark Cerny revealed that Sony's next machine will be backwards compatible with the Playstation 4.

Sony has expanded on this a bit more, stating that the feature is going to be "powerful" and "developer friendly" to create a seamless transition between the current console and the next. More than that, the company also revealed that the introduction of new hardware won't split the playerbase, and that multiplayer titles released on both machines will connect to the same online servers and match you with players regardless of the Playstation they're hooked up to.

Sony seem to be very cautious about easing the transition into the next gen, and this cross-play support is certainly a step in the right direction.
