Ranking 2015’s Summer Video Games From Worst To Best

4. Rocket League

Enough with the ponderous brain-ticklers for a second - how about something that feels like the nearest thing to weaponised euphoria since Resident Evil 4's shotgun kick? Despite being a sequel to the brilliantly-named Super-Sonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars (and they wonder why it didn't catch on through Google), Rocket League is at its basest form, 'football with cars'. Past that though, you see how every little part of it has been polished and refined to a mirror sheen. The feel of your ride is just perfect. Immediately responsive but belying subtleties like how to corner faster, flip through the air to block and volley shots - and how to genuinely take flight through nitrous boosts, stealing a ball in mid-air and returning to score a game-winning goal... it's a feeling like no other. Take the most primally satisfying elements of football; the skill required, the satisfaction of slamming something net-wards, the teamwork and the roar of the crowd when it all comes together. Rocket League turned into the game of the summer almost overnight, is now a registered eSport, and with any luck will see a healthy reign at the top of the multiplayer pile for years to come.
