While the new mainline Gears of War game - now reduced to simply "Gears 5" - doesn't look like it'll do much to reinvigorate the series' well-entrenched formula, for many of its fans that's just fine and dandy.

The game's incredible visuals certainly can't be argued with, and it's enormously encouraging that the campaign will place players in the shoes of Kait Diaz rather than Gears 4's utterly forgettable protagonist JD Fenix (who will still appear in a supporting role).

While there's no doubt the game will run gorgeously and offer up the expectedly smooth gunplay, hopefully The Coalition might also do something a little more ambitious with the story and gameplay loop this time.

Even if you're not sure about shelling out full price, though, you can play it day one on Xbox Game Pass.
