22. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (2015)
A stand-alone expansion to MachineGames excellent Wolfenstein: The New Order.
This is sweet and short, with some great exploration of the earlier games' scenarios, yet some experimental additions to the formula don’t always work.
Essentially remixing the original 1992 game's plot, it’s set in the midst of WW2 with you infiltrating Castle Wolfenstein itself. It starts fun and familiar with big set-pieces and an enjoyable expansion of New Order's war segments. There's a heavy emphasis on stealth though, which gives proceedings a nice white-knuckle tension.
By the mid-point you're battling Nazi Zombies. As cool as that sounds, it greatly whittles down the trademark frenetic pace and exhilarating battles... in fact, it’s a bit dull. Plus, the plot is shallow compared to the recent compelling campaigns, with you just coasting between setpieces.
Overall, Old Blood is a fun distraction for series' fans. It's a brief appetizer with some experimental flavors, as long as you don't expect a full and satisfying meal, you'll enjoy it just fine.
