The release of Final Fantasy IV is when the franchise really started to take off. As the first game released on the SNES, it delivered a truly epic story spanning three worlds that still stands amongst the series' finest today. It has been remade more often that another other title, having seen life on the PS1, Game Boy Advance, PSP, Nintendo DS and for mobile phones. As such there have been three official soundtrack releases and though these are mostly consistent, there is the odd addition here and there (the most comprehensive DS one has been used for reference here).

From 'Red Wings' in the first scene to 'The Final Battle' in the last, the game is a rollercoaster ride from a musical standpoint. In between are a number of excellent themes, including 'Battle 2', 'A Long Way To Go', 'Sorrow And Loss' and the creepy 'Dancing Doll Calcobrena'.

Not every member of the sizable cast is given a musical accompaniment, but those are do are well-suited by pieces like 'Golbez, Clad In Darkness', 'Edwards Harp' and the renowned 'Theme Of Love'. As a race, the Lunarians are also well served by an enigmatic piece of the same name.

The game spawned a short sequel, The After Years, in 2008, complete with 12 new tracks, none of which were ultimately anything out of the ordinary, though 'Epilogue II' is an uplifting experience.
