3. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (2015)

God Of War
CD Projekt RED

Competition here is so fierce that The Witcher III: Wild Hunt has to settle for third place. The thinnest of margins were involved, especially between the top four.

The Witcher III perfected the formula that had led the great (if under appreciated) Witcher II: Assassins Of Kings. Combat was more fluid this time around, exploration more rewarding and side quests more inventive. Seeing as the series is a relative rarity in that it’s based off a novel, it’s no surprise how detailed the narrative is.

Alongside that narrative, there’s a hefty dose of lore for players to explore and a huge helping of mythology too. Taking down a griffin is one of the first tasks the game throws at you, and the creatures only get more fantastical from there. Geralt’s slightly dry personality means he doesn’t quite have the iconic status of Master Chief, Commander Shepard or Ezio Auditore, but he leads the game as well as any of them.

Like Dragon Age, it comes with terrific DLC packages to complete the experience, but you may well spend so long riding around the map in the base game that you never even get to them.
