Ranking Every Legend Of Zelda Game From Worst To Best

9. Twilight Princess

Zelda Best Feature
Nintendo

Twilight Princess was the 'realistic' Zelda game fans deterred by Wind Waker's cutesy cel-shading yearned for. However, it proved what all gamers know: reality is much worse than fantasy.

A darker, supposedly more 'mature' entry into the series, Twilight Princess felt devoid of the soul which previously allowed the series to shine, and for the first time, the established formula was visibly growing mould.

Though its inumbrated realm is undeniably atmospheric, it's also desolate, a clear indication that bigger isn't better. An open ocean one expects to be largely underpopulated - the province of Hyrule, not so.

Perhaps had it not followed three almost untouchable 3D Zelda games, Twilight Princess would rate higher. Link's lycanthropy is a welcome addition, and there's just enough levity to stop it treading into dour territory (the unnerving bug-aficionado Agitha springs to mind). However, there's something intangible lacking, as well as the inescapable sense that the sun is setting on the Hylian magic.

Plus, five heart pieces for a heart container? Down with that sort of nonsense.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
