Ranking Every Mario Kart From Worst To Best

9. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (GameCube, 2003)

Still commanding second-hand prices at retail of a handsome £20-25 ($25-32), Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was both progressive and regressive. The gap between this and the last true home console Mario Kart was a whopping 6 years (or 7 depending on your territory), so fans were eager to get their hands on the next game in the franchise.

New features included two characters riding in each kart allowing for co-op play. One player would drive and the other would fire off weapons; players could swap on-the-fly at any point during the race. It allowed for character pairs like Mario with Luigi, Donkey and Diddy Kong and Bowser with Bowser Junior. The graphics were excellent for the time with bright colours and detailed characters plus the gameplay was smoother than ever.

But the biggest misstep was the lack of online play. This came at a time when Sony and Microsoft were building their online services and it wouldn't be until 2005 with the release of Mario Kart DS that Nintendo would begin their own. The GameCube instead offered a LAN adapter to set up 16-player races.

Number nine in the list: it's fine, but has been bettered elsewhere.
