Ranking Every Mass Effect Squadmate Ever
16. Thane
Thane’s character has a fascinating premise: the killer being killed by time. He’s an interesting, wise companion through ME2 and and effective combatant in the field, but a few lost points here and there see him end up in the lower half of the middle.
To write a legendary assassin then have his mission be entirely free of combat was a risk, but one that fell short. Playing as Paragon forces Thane to act out of character in the interrogation and following the target from the upper balconies was tiresome and fiddly.
Then there’s ME3. We always knew he was terminal, but reading that passage with him was still heartbreaking. And while that moment is sensitively tender, the attack of Kai Leng is somewhat lacking. Thane gets the drop on Leng but is ultimately given mortal wounds. This could be the last time Shepard ever sees him, and even if you romance him you don’t get much more than a ‘See ya!’ as you race off after Leng. The fact the likes of Garrus and Tali never bring up his death is strange too. So close, yet so far.
