Ranking Every Mass Effect Squadmate Ever
11. Legion
Legion is picked up very late in ME2; unless you’re actively trying to rush to Legion he’s normally picked up after all the squadmates and their loyalty missions. Because of this rather brief stint as a squadmate, Legion falls agonisingly short of the top ten.
The time he spends by Shep’s side is a fascinating one though, adding much needed depth to the Geth, helping us see things from their perspective. Even his name casts him as an outsider, with the Biblical quote EDI suggests being a reference to demons consuming a man. He’s Legion, for the Geth are many. But amongst the the rest of the galaxy, he doesn’t receive much trust.
Rushing for Legion and taking him on remaining loyalty missions provides engaging moments (especially if you take him on Talis), but his high point comes in ME3. We see the rise of the Geth from an insider perspective, not just as killing machines. So much did he evoke sympathy that the player base is split into thirds on who saved the Quarians, the Geth, or both.
He asks one of the most haunting questions of self-acceptance in any piece of entertainment anywhere too. Does this unit have a soul?
