Ranking Every Mass Effect Squadmate Ever

5. Mordin

Mass Effect Garrus
Bioware

Mordin was not always the most effective in battle (although on Insanity difficulty his Incinerate power is a necessity against armoured enemies), but his value as a squadmate was much higher than just gunplay. The genophage is one of the more complex, absorbing arcs of the entire Mass Effect series, and Mordin is right in the thick of it.

While some of the lower entries on this list have suffered from being rather two dimensional, Mordin is one of the most layered characters in the saga. Such a sweet scientist Salarian, he even rewrites Gilbert & Sullivan tunes to entertain Shepard. But at the same time, he had a guiding hand in one of the most callous extinction attempts in the galaxy’s history, almost wiping out the Krogan race entirely.

We see Mordin’s guilt and justification co-exist, with his ability as a scientist to compartmentalise between the human (or, Krogan) cost of his actions and the logical necessity of it. This all climaxes in one of the most haunting and selfless deaths in video game history, as Mordin sacrifices himself to undo his actions. It had to be him. Someone else might have gotten it wrong.
