Ranking Every Mass Effect Squadmate Ever
18. Jaal
The Angara are an intriguing new race, with their softly spoken, heart on their sleeve nature. It feels like the writers based them on the Elcor, but as a fully formed race with individual characters.
They’re the most memorable new addition to the franchise to come out of Andromeda. The villain was a sci fi B-movie copy and SAM fell flat. Provided Mass Effect gets another triple-A release, the Angara are hopefully here to stay.
Jaal’s issue is he’s not the clear best Angara. Turians, Quarians and Asari are all races we’ve seen much more of, yet the vast majority of players would easily pick Garrus, Tali and Liara as their respective favourites. However, Jaal faces competition from Avela and Evfra, as well as the compelling story of the Moshae.
Not being the clear standout of his race can’t count too harshly though. There are four Humans above him, and that’s ignoring Shep, Anderson and The Illusive Man. Jaal’s biggest problem is his tell all nature means his edge as a mysterious figure disappears. As the only new race we encounter, it might have been better to make players really work to get to know him; then the connection would be deeper.
