The SNES may have tested the waters with 3D graphics but it wasn’t until the Nintendo 64 that the company made its true jump to 3D gaming. Utilising a 64-bit processor that gave the console its name, the N64 released in 1996 to critical acclaim, becoming the first major console to have four built-in controller ports for multiplayer but saw criticism from some developers.

A major point of contention was Nintendo’s decision to remain with cartridges over CD-ROMs. This approach provided better performance but smaller storage space, forcing some companies to move their games onto the PS1 - Final Fantasy VII being a prominent example. As a consequence of third-party developers flocking to Sony's PlayStation, the console saw fewer than 400 games release in its lifetime.

It became the old argument of quality over quantity and major releases like Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, Banjo-Kazooie and Ocarina of Time are widely considered some of the best games ever made. Combined with its multiplayer capabilities, its legacy has endured and remains fondly remembered.
