In Development: Age of Empires IV (with Relic Entertainment)

Back in 1997, Microsoft's pushed into PC gaming with the RTS franchise Age of Empires, a rich and strategic delve into fascinating historical eras, that spanned three championed titles.

However a little over a decade later, designated developer Ensemble Studios shuttered its doors, and the franchise lost its focus and respected position.

With the announcement of the long-awaited Age of Empires IV, so came the reveal of World's Edge, a dedicated studio that will act as 'caretaker' to the franchise as it developed several titles simultaneously.

So they aren't a full-blown in-house dev, but more the equivalent of a Showrunner on a TV show: they hold the creative vision and direction of the property and work with other talented individuals to make it happen. In this specific case, by sharing assets, co-developing, and providing supporting tech.

So far, they've just shepherd a series of slick and enjoyable remakes of the original trilogy. However, the true test of their talent will be the much-hyped (and long-awaited) fourth installment...let's hope they pull it off.
