Earning recognition for genuinely funny writing (especially in video games) is a rarity. That Insomniac managed to pull off just that with its contemporary satire on gaming culture is no mean feat in itself, but that, coupled with its terrific art design and gameplay make Sunset Overdrive an oft-overlooked Xbox exclusive worth the time investment.

Inspired in no small part by Sega's cult classic Jet Set Radio and other street sports a la Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, there's simply too much to love in Sunset Overdrive's fluid, fast-paced gameplay to let its throwaway story and uninspired quest design ruin the fun.

Based on its strongest assets alone, it's clear as day, why Sony opted to hand the Spider-Man gig to Insomniac and in lieu of that game's release, it unequivocally made the right choice.
