Ranking Summer 2017's Video Games From Worst To Best
9. Absolver
Hands-down one of the coolest new IPs of the year, Absolver is a Dark Souls/For Honor-esque shared universe combat game where all players are attempting to be the ultimate warrior. Now, developers SloClap are a relatively small indie outfit so when the game exploded in popularity it did have a knock-on effect with their servers - but still, Absolver has some extremely cool mechanics at its core.
The most important for your character is the 'combat deck', essentially a weapons loadout for punches and kicks where you choose which stances each move will leave you in, or which can chain together. To unlock more moves you'll have to defend against them in real time, only banking the XP towards said move if you're victorious. In turn this encourages you to seek out the next fight and if you get put down by some blazing roundhouse, your next thought is "I want to learn that", growing both as a character and player.
Absolver really is something special, and with the increasingly brilliant Devolver Digital on publishing duties, will only get bigger and better.
