Red Dead Redemption 1 Or 2 - Which Is Better?

5. The Villains Part 1: Dutch Van Der Linde

While presenting more down-to-Earth characters, Red Dead 2 makes three crucial character flaws that have a negative effect when reflecting on the game.

Two of these flaws revolve around series antagonists Dutch and Micah. Dutch’s descent into madness happens all too quickly with the audience being given very little information as to why it happens.

During RDR the player is told that Dutch’s evil ways became apparent when he shot an innocent woman during the Blackwater heist. That event happens prior to the start of RDR2 and what was supposed to be a pivotal moment is left off-screen, never to be mentioned again.

Instead, Dutch comes to his senses by the end of RDR2 by shooting Micah and letting John go free with the gold. Dutch looks past his greed to help his friend yet the audience is led to believe that, come the events of RDR, he has somehow reverted.

The back and forth between Dutch's morals and his lust never seems to find a balance within either games's story.
