Red Dead Redemption 2: 10 Unsolved Mysteries That Will Freak You Out

6. The Lost Colony Of Roanoke

The lost colony of Roanoke is one of the earliest American mysteries (at least of those still surviving today), and has been tackled previously in pop culture by American Horror Story and Supernatural. If you wander through a certain part of the map though, you’ll see Red Dead Redemption take a crack at the mystery too.

The Roanoke colony was formed of new settlers in the USA, with one of these settlers - John White - leaving in 1587 to bring supplies over from England. However, with the Anglo-Spanish War raging on, he was unable to return until 1590. All he found in Roanoke was a single word carved into a tree: Croatoan.

The speculation over what Croatoan means and where the settlers vanished to leans into the supernatural, and Red Dead Redemption seems to play into this too. If you ride through Roanoke Valley at night, you’ll hear the ghostly wails of the settlers.

One woman will screech and cry that she wants to go home, while another will ask what that terrible noise is, and a third voice can be heard laughing in a deranged fashion. Truly creepy stuff.
